Crossbow

by jbredwards

Crossbow backports the Village Pillage update's crossbow changes to Forge 1.12.2, covering enchantments, animations and some firework behavior.

ForgeClient and serverCustom license1.12.2

What it does

The mod brings crossbows from the Village Pillage update into Minecraft 1.12.2, including their enchantments and animations. Several firework details change as well: fireworks credit their damage to whoever launched them, dispensed fireworks keep the heading they were fired with, and fireworks explode immediately when they hit a block entity. A new FireworkImpactEvent fires whenever a firework entity impacts something, so other mods can react to it.

Crossbow is also built as a library. Developers can add custom crossbows by creating an item class that extends the crossbow item and implements the crossbow interface, and can add entities that use crossbows. An opt-in config setting restores a firework behavior from an earlier development build for servers that want it.

The mod runs on Forge for Minecraft 1.12.2 only, and the environment is client and server, so the server and every player need it. AssetMover is required. The mod is released under a custom license and is not open source; public links exist for the source code, issue tracker and wiki. Files were first published on 2023-08-04, and the latest Forge file is 1.2.0 for 1.12.2, dated 2025-12-14.

Key features

  1. Village Pillage crossbows

Crossbows gain the enchantments and animations introduced with the Village Pillage update.

  2. Firework credit and direction

Firework damage is credited to the user, and dispensed fireworks keep the direction they were fired in.

  3. Instant block entity impacts

Fireworks explode as soon as they hit a block entity, instead of passing through.

  4. Firework impact event

FireworkImpactEvent fires when a firework entity hits something, giving other mods a hook into that moment.

  5. Custom crossbow API

A crossbow item class and interface let developers add their own crossbows and entities that use them.

  6. Opt-in earlier firework behavior

A config setting turns on a firework behavior taken from an earlier development build, and it stays off by default.

Questions

Does Crossbow need AssetMover?

Yes. AssetMover is a required dependency, so it must be installed next to Crossbow on Forge for 1.12.2.

Does the server need Crossbow?

Yes. Installation covers the server and each player's game.

Can Crossbow be used in other mods?

Yes. Developers can extend the crossbow item class, implement the crossbow interface and listen for FireworkImpactEvent, though the mod is not open source and is licensed under a custom license.
