ChunkSense
by jebos
ChunkSense changes how chunks load around the player, using camera direction, movement and available memory to decide which chunks are kept and which are dropped.
What it does
Chunks in the direction the camera faces load first, so terrain ahead of the player appears sooner. Movement prediction also starts loading chunks along the player's velocity vector, which helps when running quickly across the world. A memory watchdog tracks RAM use in real time and, when memory runs low, unloads distant chunks and reduces the render distance to free memory.
The render distance can adjust itself based on the amount of RAM available, and a HUD overlay on the screen reports memory, FPS and the current render distance. The thresholds that trigger these actions are configurable, and each feature can be switched off separately. View-direction loading priority is set through a config option that defaults to on.
ChunkSense runs on Forge 1.20.1 and 1.20.2. Only the client needs it, and the server can run without it. It is released under the MIT License, but it is not open source.
Key features
View-direction chunk priority
Chunks the camera is facing are queued first, so northern terrain loads before terrain behind the player when looking north.
Movement prediction
Chunks along the player's velocity vector are pre-loaded, so running east brings the eastern chunks in ahead of time.
Memory watchdog
RAM use is monitored continuously, and distant chunks are unloaded and the cache cleared when enough memory is no longer free.
Dynamic render distance
The render distance is adjusted automatically from the RAM that is available, instead of staying fixed.
HUD overlay
An on-screen overlay shows real-time RAM, FPS and render distance, so the effect of each setting can be checked in play.

Use cases
Fast travel across open terrain
Players who move quickly through large plains or along roads can have terrain loaded ahead of their path rather than appearing as they arrive.
Low-memory machines
On systems with limited RAM, the watchdog can unload far chunks and lower the render distance before the game runs out of memory.
Who it’s for: Players on Forge 1.20.x who want more control over chunk loading and memory use on their own client.

What the author says
Smart chunk loading + memory watchdog for Minecraft Forge 1.20.1 1. Smart Chunk Prioritizer — chunks are loaded not in a circle, but along the vector of view and movement. Looking north — northern chunks load first. Running east — chunks ahead pre-load.
