chatbox

by zhenshiz

chatbox turns in-game text into Minecraft-styled dialog boxes with themes, character portraits and clickable options, in the manner of Galgame visual novels.

FabricForgeNeoForgeClient and serverGNU Affero General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.20.1 – 26.3

What it does

Dialog boxes are configured through data packs, so a world can define its own conversations without changing any code. After a data pack is edited, the reload command applies the new dialog settings directly, and KubeJS scripts can listen for predefined events raised by the mod.

Several themes are preset, and commands switch between them at any time. Each dialog's appearance, position and size can be adjusted, along with option boxes, history buttons and character portraits. Portraits accept several source types, including images, player avatars and item textures, and three preset entry animations can be applied to them.

Dialog text can contain multiple options, and clicking an option can run a custom command or jump to another dialog. Text elements and options accept translation keys, so the dialogs can be localized. The mod requires Cloth Config API, and it is published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across seven release versions, 1.20.1 – 26.3, under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 only.

Use cases

Scripted story scenes

Dialog sequences with portraits and branching choices can carry a quest or a story through a world.

Server events

KubeJS scripts can use the predefined events to start dialogs in response to game actions.

Who it’s for: Map makers, pack authors and server owners who want conversation scenes in the Galgame style. Players need the mod installed to see dialogs, and the server needs it too.

Questions

Does chatbox need Cloth Config API?

Yes. Cloth Config API is a required dependency and must be installed alongside chatbox on the loader in use.

Do the server and players both need chatbox?

Yes. Servers that run it need every player to install it too.

How are dialogs changed after setup?

Dialogs are defined in data packs. After an edit, the reload command applies the new dialog settings without a restart.
