Charcoal to Dye

by biggsmcb

Charcoal to Dye lets players craft black dye from charcoal, a common furnace product, instead of relying on wither roses or squid drops.

ForgeNeoForgeServer-side onlyMIT License1.20.1 – 1.21.4

What it does

A recipe turns charcoal into black dye, giving players a way to dye cloth black that does not depend on rare drops. The author made the change for a personal modpack and kept the mod limited to this single function. Only the server needs it, so players join without installing anything. Files are published for Forge and NeoForge, covering 1.20.1 and 1.21.4, and the code is released under the MIT License, but the project is not open source.

Key features

  1. Charcoal to black dye recipe

Charcoal can be crafted into black dye, adding a recipe that the vanilla game does not include.

  2. Independent of rare drops

Black dye no longer has to come from wither roses or squid spawns, which were the only sources in vanilla.

  3. Single-purpose mod

The mod changes only this one crafting path and adds no other blocks, items or systems.

What the author says

This mod does one thing only: Allows you to craft black dye from charcoal. Charcoal was the main method of dying cloth black for the majority of human history, it makes sense that you would have this option in MInecraft too.
