Cold as Ice

by Ranold

Cold as Ice stops ice and snow from melting in the world, so placed frozen blocks stay where players put them.

What it does

Cold as Ice is a NeoForge mod that changes how ice and snow behave: they no longer melt once placed. A config option lets server owners choose whether ice, snow, or both are exempt. The mod is small and is applied through a mixin that skips the melting game ticks, which keeps the change narrow and simple to reason about.

Only the server needs the mod, so players join without installing anything. Files are available for NeoForge across 12 release versions, 1.21 – 1.21.11, under All rights reserved, which means redistribution is not granted. The latest build is 1.2, published on 2025-12-14.

Key features

  1. Un-meltable ice

Ice blocks keep their state instead of turning to water when the surrounding light or temperature would normally melt them.

  2. Un-meltable snow

Snow layers and snow blocks stay in place rather than thinning out over time.

  3. Config toggles

A config file lets the server choose whether ice, snow, or both are exempt from melting.

What the author says

Building a base out of ice and don't want it to melt? Snow not lasting where you want it? A simple mixin mod to exclude ice and snow from game ticks, essentially freezing them (hah).
