Better Safe Bed
by frankV
Better Safe Bed lets a player sleep in a bed even when a hostile mob is nearby but cannot reach them, such as one in a cave beneath the base, beyond the walls or on the roof.
What it does
Vanilla Minecraft refuses to start sleep when a hostile mob sits within 8 blocks sideways and 5 blocks up or down from the bed, and shows the message that monsters are nearby. The player stays awake until those monsters leave or die, even when a wall separates them from the bed. The mod adds a further check for mobs in range, so the bed works when none of them can target the sleeper.
The mod is server-side only: the server runs it, and players connect without installing anything. It needs no client install unless it is used in single-player. Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, across 17 release versions in the 1.16.5 – 1.21.7 range, and the latest Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt files target 1.21.7.
The code is open source under the MIT License, and the source code and issue tracker are public. The first release came out on 2022-06-01 and the latest on 2024-11-03.
Key features
Extra sleep check
Beds accept sleep when monsters are close but unable to target the sleeper, such as behind a wall.
Targeting-based check
The added check looks at whether nearby mobs can actually target the player, not only at their distance.
Vanilla rule kept
Monsters that can reach the sleeper still block sleep, so the change only removes the blocker when it is safe.
Server-side operation
The change runs on the server, and clients need nothing unless the mod is used in single-player.

Use cases
Base next to a cave
A bed set against a wall can be used while a mob lurks in a cave below the base.
Roof or outside walls
A monster on the roof or outside the walls no longer keeps the sleeper awake.
Who it’s for: Server owners and single-player players who build bases where hostile mobs spawn nearby but cannot reach the bed. Players who want the vanilla sleep rule unchanged should not use it.
How it compares
Let Me Sleep - Better Sleep Check is also server-side only and open source, but it is published for Forge and NeoForge, not Fabric or Quilt, across 1.18 – 1.21.1, and is licensed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only. Survival Plus is a Fabric mod for client and server, open source under the Apache License 2.0, covering 1.20.2 – 1.21.10, so both sides must install it. Better Safe Bed reaches all four loaders across 1.16.5 – 1.21.7 and needs no client install.

What the author says
This mod solves the issue of being unable to sleep even when you are safe, due to a random mob lurking in the cave beneath your base, outside its walls or on its roof. Normally, if a "monster" is within 8 blocks horizontally and 5 blocks vertically from your bed, you will receive a message saying "You may not rest…
