Better Nether Generation

by GamingCrew69

Better Nether Generation raises the ceiling of the Nether, so its roof generates higher than in vanilla, using a Fabric mod that rewrites the Nether's world height.

What it does

Vanilla Nether generation places the roof at a fixed height. This mod edits the Nether's generation so the roof sits higher, and the mod offers variants that raise the world height to 192 or 256 blocks. The author notes that earlier datapacks had already made the Nether taller by 128 blocks, and that the Amplified Nether datapack for 1.18 followed the same idea, before this mod was written as a full rewrite.

Server-side only: only the server needs the mod, and players join without installing anything. Because the world becomes taller, the generated terrain and the world file grow considerably, and higher settings cost more performance. The author recommends the 192 block or 256 block version. Changing a world to the 256 block variant carries a risk of losing anything built or generated in the higher area, so the author advises updating a world carefully. The mod is published for Fabric only, across eight release versions 1.18.2 – 1.20.1, and is released under All rights reserved, so it is not open source.

Key features

  1. Higher Nether roof

The roof of the Nether generates at a greater height than in vanilla, changing the shape of the dimension.

  2. Selectable height variants

Variants raise the Nether to 192 or 256 blocks, letting server owners choose a height for their world.

  3. Perfect generation backport

The author states that the terrain matches the newer generation logic, while the seed produces different terrain.

  4. Datapack alternative

A datapack version modifies the Nether world height without changing the mod, and works with Forge where this mod does not.

Questions

Which loaders does Better Nether Generation support?

The mod is published for Fabric only. Its author notes that using the datapack version is the only way to play with Forge.

Does the server need the mod?

Yes. Players join without it, since only the server has to run the mod.

Which height variant should the author recommend?

The author suggests the 192 block or the 256 block version over the others, because higher settings increase the world file size and cost performance.

What the author says

This datapack/mod a full rewrite of my older datapack Higher Nether Roof-256 blocks which was one of the first ever datapacks that made the Nether higher than 128 blocks (yes even before Starmute made his 1.18 Amplified Nether datapack/mod). I personally suggest using either the 192 block version or the 256 block…
