Better Mipmaps

by sidit77

Higher-resolution resource packs look noisy at a distance, and Better Mipmaps raises the mipmap limit so those textures filter cleanly.

FabricClient-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.20.1 – 1.21.11

What it does

Minecraft by default builds full mipmaps only for textures up to 16x16, so larger pack textures lose detail in the distance. Better Mipmaps increases the maximum mipmap level to 10, which corresponds to 1024x1024 textures, for the Fabric loader only.

The block texture atlas takes its maximum mipmap level from the smallest texture packed into it, so one leftover 16x16 texture caps the whole atlas at four levels even in a nearly complete pack. The mod upscales smaller textures before the stitching step, letting larger textures keep their full set of levels. It is client-side only, so servers run without it and players install it alone.

The mod is open source under the MIT License and is published for Fabric across 17 release versions, 1.20.1 – 1.21.11. Its latest file, 0.2-1.21.11, targets 1.21.11 and was released on 2025-12-30. NPotFixer requires it.

Key features

  1. Higher mipmap levels

Raises the maximum mipmap level so textures up to 1024x1024 get complete mipmap chains.

  2. Automatic upscaling

Smaller textures are upscaled before the atlas is stitched, so one small texture no longer limits the rest.

  3. Reduced distant noise

Textures seen at a distance filter more smoothly, which reduces visual artifacts from high-resolution packs.

  4. Pack-independent operation

Works with any resource pack without requiring the pack to be edited or rebuilt.

Use cases

High-resolution resource packs

Players running 64x or larger texture packs can use the mod to keep distant blocks from shimmering.

Mixed-resolution packs

A pack with mostly large textures and a few 16x16 ones is handled by upscaling the small textures before stitching.

Who it’s for: Players who use high-resolution resource packs on Fabric and want cleaner distant textures. Server owners do not need it, because the environment is client-side only.

Questions

Does Better Mipmaps need to be installed on a server?

No. Only the player's game needs it, and servers run without it.

Which loader does Better Mipmaps support?

Fabric is the only loader listed for the mod, so it cannot be installed on Forge or NeoForge.

Does Better Mipmaps require another mod that NPotFixer depends on?

NPotFixer lists Better Mipmaps as a requirement, so it must be installed alongside NPotFixer.

In the catalog

Better Mipmaps is one of 36,990 Utility mods on ModsFinder, and one of 25,772 Utility mods for Fabric. 19,862 mods support Minecraft 1.21.11.

What the author says

Anything higher than that will have incomplete mipmaps. This mod fixes this by increasing the maximum level of mipmaps to 10 (1024x1024). The optimal mipmap level depends on the resolution of your resource pack and can be found in the table below: | Texture Resolution | Optimal Mipmap Level |…
