Auto Torch(er)

by GalvinPython

Auto Torch(er) places torches for the player whenever their light level drops to 0, so caves and night-time work stay visible without manual placement.

What it does

Auto Torch(er) removes one of the chores of adventure play: keeping torches placed in dark areas. When the player stands where the light level reaches 0, the mod places a torch automatically, which keeps the area clear of hostile mobs and lets the player work, eat and explore without holding torches in hand. Players should still keep torches in the inventory, since the mod uses them from there.

The mod also gives players a way to switch the automatic placement on or off themselves, and it adds new commands for that purpose. It is a server-side only mod, so players join a server running it without installing anything. Files are published for Fabric and Quilt, and the 26.1.1 builds run under the MIT License, which makes the code open source. The latest files, 1.3.0+26.1.1 from 2026-04-25, target 26.1.1, and the mod covers 1.21.10 – 26.1.1 across four release versions.

Key features

  1. Automatic torch placement

Torches are placed on their own when the light level at the player's position falls to 0.

  2. Player toggle

Players can turn the automatic placement on or off for themselves, without affecting other players on the server.

  3. New commands

The mod adds commands that control the torch behavior, so server owners and players can manage it from chat.

  4. Mob-free dark areas

Lit paths through caves and at night reduce the spawning of hostile mobs in the places the player walks.
