AsyncParticles
by Harvey_Husky
Within the particle system, AsyncParticles moves particle vertex transformations onto the GPU and runs particle ticks on a separate thread.
What it does
Particle vertex work is handed to the graphics card, so less data has to be sent to it on every frame. That lowers the load on the processor and can raise frame rates. The mod replaces an earlier async vertex extraction step, which is now disabled by default, while improving compatibility with other mods. Particle ticks run asynchronously, and the particle limit can be changed in the config screen.
AsyncParticles runs on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, and its environment is client-side only, so servers do not need it and players install it alone. Files target 1.20.1 – 26.3 across 16 release versions, with the latest builds for 1.21.1 and 1.20.1 published on 2026-10-11 in the beta channel. The mod is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and Cloth Config API is an optional dependency that adds the config screen. The mod remains in the beta stage so that potential conflicts are flagged early.
Key features
GPU particle vertex transforms
Particle vertex transformations run on the GPU, reducing the data uploaded to it each frame.
Asynchronous particle ticks
Particle ticking runs on a separate thread, taking that work off the main game loop.
Configurable particle limit
The number of particles allowed can be raised or lowered in the config screen, for example for campfire-heavy scenes.
Campfire particle scenes
Large numbers of campfires can be placed together, with the particle cap set in the config screen.
Contraption weather blocking
Create contraptions can block vanilla weather, so weather does not reach areas they cover.
Compatibility
Latest build for each game version and loader.

This mod also publishes snapshot builds. Snapshots are not shown in the matrix.
Requirements
Dependencies declared by the latest file for each loader.

Use cases
Heavy particle scenes
Players who fill large areas with campfires or other particle sources can keep frame rates steadier with particle work moved off the CPU.
Who it’s for: Players who run many particle effects on the client and want to reduce the per-frame work done by the CPU.
How it compares
Smart Particles is client-side only, open source under the MIT License and published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across 1.7.10 – 26.3. GPU servers is a Fabric mod for 1.21.8 – 1.21.11 that runs server-side only and is not open source. GpuShift is a client and server mod for 1.20.1 – 1.21.1, under All rights reserved and not open source.
