AniSkin
by AlexSocol
AniSkin lets a player show animated skins on their character, loaded from image files stored on the computer or from a web server.
What it does
Skins are read from a folder on the player's machine or from a URL that points directly to a .png file. A config entry maps the player's username to the file to load, so a skin named AlexSocol.png is applied to the player named AlexSocol. Remote images can come from any free image hosting service that serves direct file links, and both http and https addresses are accepted.
The mod is aimed at single-player players who want a custom or animated skin, and at players who share a skin pack with friends by pointing their configs at a common folder or hosted set. The config file is where the folder path or URL is set, with a placeholder nickname that gets replaced by the player's actual name when the skin is looked up.
AniSkin requires ASJCore, and it runs on Forge for Minecraft 1.7.10 only, where the only published file is version 1 from 2023-10-14. It is installed on the player's side alone, so servers need nothing. The mod is released under a custom license that is not open source, and issues are tracked on a public issue tracker.
Key features
Animated skin frames
Skins can be animated as a sequence of frames, with the number of frames not capped by the mod.
Local and remote sources
Skin images can be read from a local folder or fetched from a URL, so a file can stay on the computer or come from a hosting site.
Name-matched files
Each file is matched to a username, so the file named after the player is the one that loads.
Configurable paths
The folder path or URL for skins is set in the mod config, with a placeholder nickname replaced by the player's name.
Resolution rules
Images must be .png files, with a default frame size of 64x32 and frame dimensions that can be large, limited mainly by the graphics card.
Compatibility
Latest build for each game version and loader.
Only full game releases are shown. This mod publishes no snapshot builds.
Requirements

How it compares
3DSkinLayers 1.7.10 is also a client-side Forge mod for 1.7.10, but it is under All rights reserved and is not open source, and it works with a different set of skin layers. Local Skin Changer is open source under the Apache License 2.0 and client-side, but it targets Fabric and Forge for 1.19.2 – 1.21.10, so it does not cover 1.7.10. Secure HTTP Skins is for Forge 1.20.1 and needs the client, with the server optional.
