Acedium Sodiumized

by viktor245

Acedium Sodiumized, an unofficial NeoForge fork, swaps Sodium's terrain renderer for an NVIDIA-based one on Minecraft 1.21.1.

What it does

The fork replaces Sodium's terrain renderer with a renderer based on Nvidium, which uses NVIDIA features such as mesh shaders. Terrain geometry is kept in GPU buffers, and the GPU takes on more of the rendering work. The stated target is terrain rendering, the bottleneck in scenes with a lot of visible terrain; results depend on hardware, settings and other mods.

Region Keep Distance retains terrain that was loaded earlier, beyond the normal render distance, and can request additional chunks from the server to generate unexplored terrain. Keeping more terrain loaded uses more VRAM, and when space runs out the fork unloads some terrain even with that setting enabled. Sodium still has to load chunks first.

Sodium is the dependency the mod needs, and the build currently supported is 0.8.13 on NeoForge 1.21.1. Newer 0.8 versions are allowed to load, but they are only supported until the fork is updated for them. Sodium 0.6 support has been discontinued, and earlier releases stay available without further updates. The mod is client-side only, and it is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only; the source code is open source.

Key features

  1. NVIDIA terrain renderer

Sodium's terrain renderer is replaced by one built on Nvidium and tuned for NVIDIA hardware.

  2. GPU-held terrain geometry

Terrain geometry stays in GPU buffers, so less work is left to the CPU during frames.

  3. Region Keep Distance

Previously loaded terrain is kept beyond the normal render distance, with a setting to control how far it is retained.

  4. Fallback to Sodium

If the custom renderer is unavailable, it remains off and Sodium's standard renderer takes over.

Sable: New Sodium Compat is a NeoForge client-side mod for 1.21.1 under the MIT License, so it covers compatibility rather than rendering. VulkanModNeoForge is also client-side only and open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, but it targets 1.21 – 1.21.3 and uses Vulkan instead of NVIDIA renderer features.

Questions

Does Acedium Sodiumized need Sodium installed?

Yes. A required dependency here is Sodium; the version officially supported for NeoForge 1.21.1 is 0.8.13.

Which graphics hardware does the renderer need?

The renderer targets NVIDIA GPUs and needs OpenGL extensions that the driver supports. When the required capabilities are missing at startup, the custom renderer stays off and Sodium's renderer is used.

Does the renderer work with Iris shader packs?

No. Activating an Iris shader pack switches the custom renderer off, and whether other rendering mods work alongside it hinges on how they touch the terrain renderer.
