Unloaded Activity

by Moono

Unloaded Activity catches up blocks and entities that were left unloaded for a while, so the world reflects the time that passed once they come back into range.

What it does

Blocks and entities that enter simulation distance after a stretch of unloading are updated to match the elapsed time, as if they had been simulated all along. The same catch-up runs when the night is skipped, so crops and furnaces progress during the skip.

Rather than replaying every missed tick, the mod calculates the resulting state of each block from the number of ticks missed. Blocks that rely on randomness, such as random and precipitation ticks, are advanced with sampled values from binomial and negative binomial distributions. Supported content includes redstone blocks, brewing stands, campfires, dropped item despawning, beehives, the sniffer egg and dried ghast. Some vanilla content is not covered, and the author lists the exceptions on the project's wiki.

The mod is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across 27 release versions, 1.19.2 – 26.3, and the environment is server-side only. Only the server needs it. It is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only and is open source, with public source code, an issue tracker and a wiki.

Key features

  1. Catch-up simulation

Loaded-in blocks and entities are advanced to the state they would have reached over the unloaded period.

  2. Calculated block states

Each block's state is computed from the number of missed ticks instead of running every tick in turn.

  3. Night skip support

Crops, smelting and other timed processes progress when the night is skipped.

  4. Randomized blocks

Random and precipitation ticks are modeled with binomial and negative binomial sampling.

  5. Broad vanilla coverage

Redstone, brewing stands, campfires, beehives, item despawning and more are included.

Use cases

Large survival worlds

Farms and furnaces far from the player keep producing realistic results when the player returns after long absences.

Multiplayer servers

Server owners who want unattended bases and farms to progress while players are elsewhere can use it on the server alone.

Who it’s for: Server owners and players who run large worlds with many far-off farms, machines and redstone setups that would otherwise stay frozen while unloaded.

Questions

Does Unloaded Activity need to be installed on the client?

No. Only the server needs it, and players join without installing anything.

Which loader should a server use?

The mod is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. The latest Forge file is 0.7.3+mc1.20-1.20.1, while the Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt files are 0.7.3+26.3 for 26.3.

Are all blocks and entities simulated?

No. Some vanilla content is unsupported, and the author lists the exceptions on the project's wiki. Support for some other mods' content depends on their specific builds.

What the author says

This mod changes that by simulating blocks and entities once they get within simulation distance to catch up after being unloaded for a period of time. It'll be as if they've always been simulated! This also works when you're skipping the night. Instead of waiting for your iron to cook, or for your crops to grow, you…
