Thread Weave

by Awyvrix

Thread Weave lets a NeoForge mod move heavy calculations off the Minecraft main thread, while world changes stay on it.

NeoForgeClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.21 – 1.21.11

What it does

Calculation-heavy machines, reactors and AI routines all draw on one shared processing budget in the default setup. Thread Weave divides such logic into a computation part that can run on background threads and a world part that stays on the main thread. Its simulation methods accept only pure data, so a background calculation cannot touch live level state and cause race conditions.

A mod that uses Thread Weave defines what data is used and what calculation happens, then runs the cycle: extract data from a block entity during the Minecraft tick, run the simulation on background threads, collect the updated values, and apply the changes back to the world on the main thread. Side effects are allowed inside the async execution, but placing blocks and other world changes still depend on the main thread and are kept out of it.

The framework is aimed at mod authors who have expensive logic inside block entities or tick handlers. Thread Weave is published for NeoForge only, under the MIT License, and the code is open source. Every player and the server need a copy of the mod. Files cover the NeoForge builds for 1.21 – 1.21.11, with 0.2.3-NeoForge for 1.21.11 as the latest file.

Key features

  1. Background simulation

Heavy calculations run in an async processing framework on background threads instead of the main server thread.

  2. Pure data inputs and outputs

Simulation methods take input and output data objects, so the simulation works only on copied values.

  3. Extract, run, apply

Data is pulled from block entities during the tick, processed off-thread, and the results are written back to the world.

  4. Thread-safe world access

World modifications stay on the main thread, which keeps block placement and similar changes safe from race conditions.

Questions

Does Thread Weave have to be installed on both sides?

Yes. The server and every player need the mod installed.

Which loader does Thread Weave support?

Only NeoForge. Files are published for NeoForge across the 1.21 – 1.21.11 builds, and there is no Fabric build listed.

Can Thread Weave change blocks from the background thread?

World changes such as placing blocks stay on the main thread. The background part only computes data and returns it to be applied.
