Thermia

by Nyonyix

Thermia adds a temperature system for NeoForge that tracks heat and cold on players, mobs and items, and extends the TerraFirmaCraft temperature model to non-player entities.

What it does

Temperature in Thermia is calculated from a thermodynamic model: each enclosed volume holds an amount of energy that rises and falls over time, so a room warms or cools gradually rather than switching at once. Solar heating follows the time of day and peaks during the day, with raycast shadow occlusion deciding whether sunlight reaches a given position. Wind chill cools exposed positions, and the same raycast checks decide how much of an entity is sheltered.

Exposure is sampled from several angles with multiple rays, so a partly covered position receives partial heating or cooling instead of a full on or off value. A dynamic flood fill measures the enclosed space around a player, with a default limit of 13824 blocks. Block seals treat the edge blocks of an enclosure as walls, and a window or a partial block can let heat through or block it depending on its shape. Fire and other TerraFirmaCraft heat sources are supported, and heated items such as ingots and pots carry their own temperature.

Thermia requires Curios API and TerraFirmaCraft. Installation covers the server and each player's game. Files are published for NeoForge 1.21.1, with 0.2.1-beta as the latest build, released under the European Union Public License 1.2 and open source.

Key features

  1. Solar heating

Sunlight warms a position during the day and peaks at midday, with raycast shadows blocking it where terrain or walls stand between the sun and the position.

  2. Wind chill

Wind cools exposed positions, and open windows let outside air into an enclosed room, which lowers the temperature inside.

  3. Heat and cold sources

Fire, heated items and contact with cold blocks such as ice add or remove warmth, and each source is weighted by distance and exposure.

  4. Data maps for temperatures

Entity, block and fluid temperatures are set in JSON data maps, so pack makers can change what is hot, cold, radiative or conductive.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Server owners and pack makers who want a temperature system that covers non-player entities and can be tuned through data maps. Players who only want decoration should look elsewhere.

Questions

Does Thermia need Curios API and TerraFirmaCraft?

Yes. Both are required dependencies, so both must be installed next to Thermia on NeoForge 1.21.1.

Does Thermia have to be installed on the server?

Yes. Installation covers the server and each player's game.
