Terrarium Expanded

by intplex

Terrarium Expanded replaces vanilla overworld terrain with one shaped by real map data, and a chosen zoom level sets the playable world's size.

FabricNeoForgeServer required, client optionalMIT LicenseOpen source1.21.1 – 1.21.11

What it does

Terrain heights come from elevation tiles, land biomes from reduced ecoregion tiles and inland water from global surface-water seasonality data. Ocean temperature tiers draw on bundled sea-surface temperature data. The mod is open source under the MIT License and is published for Fabric and NeoForge, with builds for 1.21.1 and 1.21.11.

The server is required, while the client is optional. Higher zoom levels create a far larger world with finer geographic detail, though they also need more remote tile requests during generation. Retrieved terrain and surface-water files are kept in a local store, and clearing that store only slows later generation until the files are fetched again. Integrations for Biomes O Plenty, Regions Unexplored and Nature's Spirit are included, and datapacks can raise the world's minimum and maximum Y level.

Key features

  1. Real-world terrain

Terrain heights follow AWS Terrarium elevation tiles, so mountains and valleys match real locations.

  2. Zoom-based world size

Choosing a zoom level changes how large the playable world is and how much real-world distance each block represents.

  3. Local tile store

Fetched tiles are stored locally, so generation in already-visited regions runs more smoothly.

  4. Biome integrations

Included integrations connect the generator with Biomes O Plenty, Regions Unexplored and Nature's Spirit.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Server owners who want a generated overworld based on real geography. Players join without installing anything beyond their normal client setup.

Questions

Does Terrarium Expanded need to be installed on the client?

No. The server is required and the client is optional, so players can join a server running the mod without installing it.

Why does generation slow down in new areas?

Fresh regions need remote tile requests, so the first visit is slower. After tiles are stored locally, revisiting those regions is smoother.

Which loaders does Terrarium Expanded support?

Builds are published for Fabric and NeoForge, with the latest file for 1.21.11 on both loaders.
