Staffs & Tomes

by Aolu

Staffs & Tomes gives weapons and tools magical spells, cast by right-clicking with a magic weapon held in the main hand.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltServer required, client optionalMIT License1.21.4 – 1.21.11

What it does

Magic weapons in the mod can cast a basic spell on right click, a crouch spell when the player crouches while clicking, and a sprint spell when the player sprints while clicking. The mod ships as a data pack, so it is added to a world or server by copying the pack into its datapacks folder and activating it. aolu Common Resources must be installed alongside it, and the server and any client can run the mod with the dependency present.

The magic weapons take their values from the attributes the player already has, so status effects such as Strength and Weakness change their output. Haste and Mining Fatigue also affect how quickly spells can be cast. Holding a magic weapon in the offhand lowers attack damage and attack speed, while a weapon in the main hand with an empty offhand gains extra attack speed and armor points.

Staffs & Tomes adds its own enchantments for these weapons, including Swift Strike, which raises attack speed by 0.1 per level up to level 3, and Brute Force, which adds 1 attack damage. Brute Force cannot be combined with another damage enchantment. Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, covering game versions 1.21.4 – 1.21.11, and the mod is released under the MIT License but is not open source.

Key features

  1. Spell casting by click

A basic spell fires on right click, with separate crouch and sprint variants bound to the same input.

  2. Attribute-scaled weapons

Magic weapons read the player's attack damage, spell power and attack speed, so status effects change their results.

  3. Offhand and main-hand rules

An offhand magic weapon reduces attack stats, while a main-hand weapon with an empty offhand gains speed and armor.

  4. Custom enchantments

Swift Strike and Brute Force are added for magic weapons, with Swift Strike capped at level 3 and Brute Force exclusive to itself among damage enchantments.

Use cases

Spellcasting on a server

Server owners can install the data pack and its dependency so players get spell-casting weapons without client changes.

Who it’s for: Players who want spell-casting weapons in survival or adventure play, and server owners who prefer a data pack over a mod jar, since clients need nothing beyond the server setup.
