Sprinting Crits

by AndrewGaming587

Sprinting Crits restores critical hits from sprint attacks, a mechanic that later versions of Minecraft removed, through a data pack that server owners install.

What it does

Earlier versions of the game let a player who attacked while sprinting and falling land a critical hit. That ability was later removed except under certain conditions. The Sprinting Crits data pack brings it back with its own critical hit functions, which trigger when the player is falling while sprinting, as opposed to falling without sprinting. Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt for game versions 1.20.3 – 1.21.5, along with a Data pack build for server platforms.

Because only the server runs the pack, players join without installing anything. The author notes several limits. The sprint crit does not wait for the attack indicator to charge, so it can deal the same damage as a charged hit, which the author calls overpowered. Smite and Bane of Arthropods bonuses are not checked during the calculation, and a fix for attacks made from too far away is planned for a later update. Snapshot builds are published, and the license is Creative Commons Attribution 4.0, so the mod is not open source. The source code, issue tracker and wiki are publicly available.

The pack has a data pack form for server platforms, so any server that runs the pack gets the change without a mod loader.

Key features

  1. Sprint critical hits

Attacks made while sprinting and falling count as critical hits, so the damage is higher than a normal swing.

  2. Critical kill sounds

A kill made with a sprint critical plays the death sound, while a non-critical hit that kills the entity stays silent.

  3. Separate crit functions

The pack relies on its own critical hit functions rather than changing the attack indicator, so the indicator still reads as before.

  4. Known limits

The author notes that the attack cooldown cannot be read reliably, so the crit ignores whether the indicator is charged.

Questions

Does Sprinting Crits need a mod loader?

No. It is a data pack, so it runs on a vanilla server without Fabric, Forge, NeoForge or Quilt. Mod loader files are also published for the same versions.

Do players need to install Sprinting Crits?

No. Only the server needs the pack, while clients may add it, so players join without installing anything.

Which game versions does Sprinting Crits support?

The files cover 1.20.3, 1.20.4, 1.20.5, 1.20.6, 1.21, 1.21.1, 1.21.2, 1.21.3, 1.21.4 and 1.21.5, with the latest file for 1.21.5.

What the author says

Sprinting Crits is a datapack that re-adds the ability to get critical hits while sprinting. After 1.9 was released, the ability to get a critical hit while sprinting was removed (except under certain conditions). This pack aims to add it back. Questions/Issues? Post them in my discord as they are more likely to get…
