Saro´s Fakename Port

by Sarocesch

Saro´s Fakename Port lets players set a display name that replaces their real one in chat, the tab list and above their head, without changing the account itself.

What it does

A player sets a temporary display name with a command, and that name appears in death messages and over the player's head. Color codes are supported, so gold and other colors can be combined with spaces, and white spaces can be used inside a name where the command syntax allows it. Names set in a given world or on a given server stay specific to that world or server, and changing a name there does not affect other worlds.

The mod is a port of the Fakename mod by Tschipp, and it keeps the original's command behavior, with textures and credits carried over from that project. A server running it needs every connecting player to have it too. Files are published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, covering 17 release versions 1.20 – 26.3, and the code is under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, which makes it open source.

Key features

  1. Command-based display names

A command changes the name a player shows in the world, and it can be done in-game without editing any files.

  2. Name in death messages

Death messages use the chosen display name, so the name shows up in more places than the chat line alone.

  3. Name above the head

The display name is rendered above the player's character, where other players can read it.

  4. Color codes and spaces

Color codes such as gold can be used, colors can be combined, and white spaces are allowed within a name.

  5. World and server scope

A name is tied to the world or server where it was set, so it does not follow the player to other worlds.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Players who want to set a temporary name in a world or on a multiplayer server, and server owners who want names to stay separate from the real account name.

Questions

Does Fakename need to be installed on the server?

Yes. A server running it needs every connecting player to have it too.

Which loaders does Saro´s Fakename Port support?

Fabric, Forge and NeoForge all have files. The latest Fabric file is 1.9 for 26.3, the latest Forge file is 1.11-forge-26.3 for 26.3, and the latest NeoForge file is 1.10 for 26.3.

Does a name change apply to every world?

No. A name set in a world or on a server stays specific to that world or server, so changing it there does not alter other worlds.
