Sanity: Renewed

by MetalKnight56

Sanity: Renewed adds a sanity meter that drops with darkness, isolation, bad food and hostile monsters nearby, and that shapes what players see and hear as it falls.

What it does

Sanity is a meter that sits beside hunger and health. Actions such as eating rotten flesh, getting wet in rain or ocean, taking damage, moving through cobwebs, listening to Disc 11 or breaking infested blocks lower it, and the amounts are configurable. Some actions restore it instead. As sanity falls, sounds echo, vision blurs and unstable shadows appear at a distance, followed by hallucinations. Ignoring a low mental state for too long lets Inner creatures emerge.

Sanity: Renewed is a Forge, Fabric and NeoForge mod for Minecraft 1.20.1 – 1.21.1, released under the MIT License and open source. A server running it needs every connecting player to have it too. It is an unofficial continuation of Sanity, first made by croissantnova as Descent Madness for Forge 1.16 – 1.20.1, and is maintained by Antikythera Studios. The author took it over because the original had not been updated since 2023; older versions remain on the original author's page.

Key features

  1. Sanity meter

A meter tracks mental state alongside hunger and health and changes with what the player does in the world.

  2. Sanity-lowering actions

Eating bad food, taking damage, walking through cobwebs and breaking infested blocks all reduce sanity.

  3. Visual and audio distortion

Low sanity brings echoing sounds, blurred vision, shadows and hallucinations.

  4. Inner creatures

Ignoring a low mental state for too long lets deadly Inner creatures manifest.

Use cases

Harder survival play

Players who want new pressure beyond hunger and health can add the sanity mechanic to a survival world.

Who it’s for: Survival players and server owners who want a horror-leaning challenge in multiplayer worlds. Both sides need the mod, so it fits servers that can install it for all players.
