retiNO
by juliand665
retiNO fixes a macOS rendering issue on Retina displays by letting Minecraft render at a lower internal resolution when the mod is enabled.
What it does
Retina displays on macOS report a much higher pixel density than the window Minecraft draws into, so the game can end up rendering far more pixels than players see a benefit from. retiNO works on that by changing the render resolution on Retina screens. The author notes the mod only changes behavior on macOS, although it runs fine on other platforms without causing problems.
The mod is client-side only, so servers and other players do not need it. It works on Fabric and Quilt and is published for game versions 1.16.4 – 26.2 across 35 release versions. The author reports that the mod does not seem to do anything on other platforms, where a comparable effect is reached with the Resolution Control mod. Canvas users do not need retiNO, because Canvas already enables the same functionality by default.
The source is released under the MIT License and is open source. Public links exist for the source code and the issue tracker. The latest Fabric file is 1.1.0 for 26.2, published 2026-05-27, and the latest Quilt file is 1.0.1 for 1.21.11, published 2022-08-05.
Key features
Lower internal render resolution
On Retina displays the mod renders the game at a reduced resolution, cutting the number of pixels drawn each frame.
macOS focus
The change targets macOS Retina screens, and the author notes other platforms show little difference.
Fabric and Quilt builds
The mod is published for both loaders, with Fabric and Quilt files covering the same range of game versions.
Canvas overlap
Grondag's Canvas Renderer already provides this functionality, so the mod is not needed alongside it.

Use cases
Performance on Retina Macs
Players on macOS laptops with Retina screens can reduce the rendering load when frame rate is limited by pixel count.
Who it’s for: Players on macOS with Retina displays who run Minecraft with Fabric or Quilt and want to lower the render resolution. Players on other platforms or with Canvas installed get little benefit.

What the author says
This mod makes Minecraft render at half resolution on Retina displays, which is probably enough for you anyway and has the advantage of not murdering your performance and its extended family. Note: This mod only affects macOS (although it runs just fine on other platforms; it simply doesn't do anything), because…
