Light Shield
by Hyraken
Light Shield makes a held shield emit light at level 15, the same as a torch, through the Dynamic Lights mod on Fabric.
What it does
A shield that is held in the main hand or the off-hand gives off light equal to a torch while it is equipped. The light lets a player keep a torch's glow without giving up the shield for defence. The light turns off underwater, as it does with a normal torch, so it behaves like the item it imitates.
The add-on is a pure data file. It contains no Java code and no mixins, and it hooks into the Dynamic Lights tag. Because it does not touch Minecraft internals, internal game updates are less likely to break it, and it does not conflict with other rendering mods in the usual way. Dynamic Lights and Fabric API must both be installed, and the mod needs additional configuration to take effect when Dynamic Lights is present.
The mod is server-side only, so players join a server running it without installing anything. The code is under the CC0 1.0 Universal license, which places it in the public domain. The author allows the files to be used, modified and redistributed freely, though the mod is not open source in the usual sense. Files exist for Fabric and for Minecraft 26.1.2 only.
Key features
Shield emits torch light
A shield in the main hand or the off-hand gives off light level 15, the same intensity as a torch.
Lighting without losing defence
Players can see in dark places and still block attacks, without carrying a torch alongside a shield.
Automatic underwater cutoff
The shield's light switches off underwater, matching how a normal torch behaves.
Data-driven lighting
Shields are added to the Dynamic Lights tag through a data file, so no Java code or mixins are involved.

Use cases
Who it’s for: Players who use shields in dark areas and want the light of a torch without a second item in hand, and server owners who want that behaviour on a Fabric server running Dynamic Lights.
How it compares
GiveMeSomeLight is a client-side only, open source Fabric mod under the MIT License, published for 1.20.4 – 26.3. Light Shield is server-side only and is not open source. Cold Torch runs on client and server, is published for 1.21.1 – 26.3 and is not open source. Light Shield differs by running on the server alone and covering only 26.1.2.

What the author says
Your shield shines like a torch — no more choosing between blocking or seeing. Shield Light is a minimalist add-on that makes your shield emit level 15 light (the same intensity as a torch) while equipped, taking advantage of the Dynamic Lights dynamic lighting system.
