Flight Tracker

by minecraftvote77

Flight Tracker brings live positions of real-world aircraft into Minecraft, drawn from the OpenSky Network, for players who want to watch planes overhead.

ForgeClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.20.1

What it does

Aircraft are shown inside the game at their live real-world positions. Each tracked plane carries its heading, location and altitude, and altitude direction is marked with color-coded arrows so climbing and descending planes can be told apart at a glance. Tracking works in single-player and, as an experimental option, in multiplayer.

The data comes from the OpenSky Network, which limits how often requests can be made. When the rate limit is reached, updates pause briefly before the automatic refresh resumes. The mod is built for Forge 1.20.1 only, runs on client and server, and is released under the MIT License, so the code is open source.

Key features

  1. Live aircraft tracking

Real-world aircraft are followed in real time and placed inside Minecraft at their reported positions.

  2. Heading, location and altitude

Each tracked aircraft shows its heading, location and altitude taken from the feed.

  3. Color-coded altitude arrows

Arrows indicate whether an aircraft is climbing or descending, with a separate color for each direction.

  4. Experimental multiplayer

Tracking can be used on multiplayer servers, and on-screen info overlays are shown to each player.

How it compares

Full comparison

Firma Aircraft is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later, with Forge files for 1.20.1 that run on client and server. Iron Biplane is also open source, under the MIT License, for Forge 1.20.1 on client and server, and it adds flying aircraft rather than live tracking. BasicFlight is server-side only and not open source, so players join without installing anything.

Questions

Does Flight Tracker need to be installed on the server?

Yes. Every player and the server need a copy of the mod.

Which Minecraft version does Flight Tracker support?

Only 1.20.1 is listed, with Forge 0.1.0 as the latest file, published on 2025-07-31 on the beta channel.

Why do some aircraft positions pause or jitter?

The OpenSky Network rate limits requests, which can cause brief delays, and fast heading changes or rapid position updates can make planes look slightly off.
