Fading

by magistermaks

Fading makes some light sources burn out slowly, so torches, lanterns and campfires have a limited lifetime, and it is a Fabric adventure mod for 1.16.2 – 1.18.1.

FabricClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.16.2 – 1.18.1

What it does

Some light sources lose their fuel over time. A torch, a lantern or a campfire can be set to burn for a set number of minutes before it goes out, and this encourages players to use different lighting techniques across the surfaces they cover. The author intended the mod to be used alongside other mods that add more lighting options, and it works on plain vanilla without problems.

Soul torches last 8 to 15 minutes, soul lanterns 10 to 28 minutes and soul campfires 24 to 84 minutes. Fading requires Fabric API. Its files target Fabric only, and the author has no plans to port it to Forge. Client and server both need the mod, so a server owner and every player should install it. The code is released under the MIT License and is open source, and the public source code is available.

Fading is published for Fabric across six release versions: 1.16.2, 1.16.3, 1.16.4, 1.16.5, 1.17 and 1.18.1, with 1.4.0 for 1.18.1 as the latest file, dated 2022-01-04. The first release came on 2021-01-23.

Key features

  1. Slowly failing light sources

Some light sources burn out after a fixed time, so a lit area does not stay lit forever.

  2. Soul variants with longer burn times

Soul torches, soul lanterns and soul campfires each burn for their own set number of minutes.

  3. Three flint steel variants

The mod adds three flint steel variants that re-light a burnt-out source without a new craft.

  4. Configurable burn times

The burn durations of the light sources can be adjusted in a config file.

Use cases

Lighting a base with other mods

Players who run Fading with other lighting mods have more options, and the limited burn time shapes how they place light.

Adventure maps and modpacks

Adventure maps and modpacks can use the timed light sources to add pressure to exploration and camp building.

Who it’s for: Players who want light sources to run out over time, and server owners who want to add that rule to a Fabric world, will find Fading relevant. Fabric API is needed on the server and on each client.
