Death Replay

by ERTZ

Death Replay lets a player watch the last 15 seconds before their death on the respawn screen, using a button added there.

FabricClient-side onlyMIT License1.21.11

What it does

When a player dies, a gold button labeled Death Replay shows up beneath the respawn options. One click plays back the final moments of the run, so a player can see the path taken and what caused the death without leaving the death screen. The recording covers the last 15 seconds before death.

The camera retraces the real movement in first person, following the exact route walked, and the motion is smoothly interpolated. A damage timeline marks each hit with a scrubber, covering attacks, falls, explosions, fire, lava, drowning and the void. Playback controls include play, pause, rewind, step and scrubbing, with speed from 0.25× to 2.

Death Replay is a client-side only mod for Fabric, so only the player's client needs it and a server can run without it. The files target 1.21.11 alone, and the code is released under the MIT License, though the project is not open source.

Key features

  1. Instant death replay

A single button on the death screen starts playback of the last 15 seconds before the death.

  2. First-person camera path

The camera follows the real movement of the player along the exact route walked before dying.

  3. Damage timeline

Every hit is marked on a scrubber, so a player can jump straight to the attack or fall that ended the run.

  4. Transport controls

Play, pause, rewind, step and scrub are available, with playback speed from 0.25× to 2.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Players who want to understand how a death happened, and anyone who records short clips of their own play for later study. Because it is client-side only, it fits single-player worlds and multiplayer servers alike, since the server does not need it.

How it compares

Full comparison

Instant Replay Mod is a Fabric mod for 1.20 – 1.21.11, client-side only, released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only and open source. It records general gameplay rather than focusing on the death screen. Better Death Screen is a client-side only mod for both Fabric and NeoForge covering 1.21.1 – 1.21.11, under a custom license and not open source, and it changes the death screen itself rather than replaying the run.
