COH (Chat Over Heads)

by Earu

COH shows a player's chat message above their head as a short-lived bubble, and the text appears while it is being typed.

FabricForgeNeoForgeClient and serverGNU Affero General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.20.1 – 1.21.11

What it does

Chat bubbles are drawn over a player's head with vanilla text display entities. The text shown is what the player is typing in real time, and it stays visible for a few seconds after the message is sent. Commands never appear in a bubble, and a message beginning with hide hide hide is never sent to the server or shown to others. Rendering happens on the server, so only the server side needs the mod to show the bubbles; players must still install it on their client to see what is typed. The mod is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 only and is open source. It requires Fabric API and Fabric Language Kotlin on Fabric, and Kotlin for Forge on Forge.

What the author says

Chat bubbles that show what a player is typing above their head in real time and stay around for a few seconds when the message is sent. Rendering is server-side with vanilla text_display entities. Install only needs to be serverside for rendering, for typing in real time you need the client install too.
