"Cannot remove from team" workaround

by BlueGradientHorizon

"Cannot remove from team" workaround is a Fabric client mod that stops a scoreboard exception from causing lag spikes on some servers.

FabricClient-side onlyCC0 1.0 UniversalOpen source1.20.3 – 1.20.4

What it does

The mod targets an IllegalStateException thrown on the render thread when Scoreboard.removeScoreHolderFromTeam is called. On certain buggy servers the error appears as an error while executing a client task, and the resulting stalls show up as lag spikes. Installing the mod on the client removes those spikes by handling the failing call. It runs only on the client, so servers need nothing and players join without installing anything else. Files are published for Fabric only, for 1.20.3 and 1.20.4, with 1.0.1 for 1.20.4 as the latest file.

Key features

  1. Render thread fix

Handles the IllegalStateException raised when a score holder is removed from a team on the render thread.

  2. Lag spike reduction

Targets the stalls that some buggy servers produce when a team removal fails during play.

  3. Client-side operation

The workaround lives entirely on the player's side and changes nothing that a server has to run.

Questions

Does the mod need to be installed on the server?

No. It is client-side only, so only the player's client needs it and the server can run without it.

Which game versions does it support?

Files exist for 1.20.3 and 1.20.4. The latest Fabric file is 1.0.1 for 1.20.4, published on 2024-04-16.

What the author says

One thing this mod does is it replaces IllegalStateException throwing with LOGGER.warn(). Though I'm not a Java coding guru, I don't understand why the exception is thrown on render thread.
