Better Inventory Sorting (BTA 8.0.1)

by Glitchy_404

Better Inventory Sorting puts a sort button on chest and inventory screens, so players can order stacks by item, metadata and quantity in one click.

What it does

Sorting works on the chest screen and the player inventory, and it can move the same items between a chest and the inventory in either direction. Items are ordered by item ID ascending, then by metadata such as wool color, and finally by quantity descending. The mod is a port of Sort Chest for BTA 8.0.1 and is currently limited to chest GUIs, with other screens planned for a later update.

The mod works by emulating mouse clicks instead of changing inventory data directly, which is why items can briefly jump during a sort. HalpLibe is required and must be installed alongside it. Better Inventory Sorting is client-side only, so servers run without it and players can use it on their own game. It is released under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 only, is open source, and its code and issue tracker are public. Snapshot builds are published, and files target b1.7.3 only.

Key features

  1. Sort by item and metadata

Stacks are ordered by item ID ascending, then by metadata such as wool color, so matching blocks group together.

  2. Quantity ordering

Within the same item and metadata, the largest stacks come first after a sort.

  3. Chest and inventory moves

Matching items can be moved from the inventory into a chest, or from a chest back to the inventory.

  4. Rebindable keys and mod menu

The sort controls can be rebound in the key settings and the mod is selectable from the ModMenu list.

Use cases

Organizing storage chests

Players with several chests can tidy each one, keeping like items together in a predictable order.

Clearing the inventory

Matching stacks can be pushed into a chest, freeing slots in the player inventory.

Who it’s for: Players on b1.7.3 who keep many items in chests and want a faster way to arrange them. Players who run the game alone or with others on a server use it on their own client.

How it compares

Full comparison

Better With Autostack is also client-side only and open source, released under the MIT License for b1.7.3, but it automates stacking rather than sorting on a click.
