Better Dogs

by realD3rp

Better Dogs changes how tamed dogs behave, with new dog beds, bowls, aggression modes and commands for throwing sticks and bones.

What it does

The mod adds vanilla-like features that improve dogs. New blocks change and enhance the vanilla wolves: a dog bed can be crafted from 16 carpets, which allows the bed to be customized further. A dog that sits on a bed respawns there after dying, and the death timer is longer than in vanilla. A dog bowl lets players feed a dog by holding food and interacting with the bowl, and a seriously injured dog can eat from the bowl to regenerate health automatically.

Equipment and combat work through dog armor: a dog must be wearing armor before it can be given a weapon, and interacting with a dog while holding a weapon hands it over. Crouching and sitting are added as dog actions. Throwing sticks or bones, or doing a crouch action, makes nearby dogs chase, which can be used to distract them. Players can switch a tamed dog between three aggression levels by using a stick on it: passive, neutral and hostile. Passive dogs attack nothing, neutral dogs attack only skeletons and anything that damages them, and hostile dogs attack hostile mobs nearby.

The mod runs on the server and is not needed by players. Installation is for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, with files for 26.3 and earlier builds back to 1.21.11. It is published under All rights reserved, so it is not open source. Data pack support is listed as an additional server platform.

Key features

  1. Dog beds

Beds crafted from 16 carpets let a dog sit and respawn there, with a longer death timer than vanilla.

  2. Dog bowls

Holding food and interacting with a bowl fills it, and a seriously injured dog eats from it to heal.

  3. Dog armor and weapons

A dog must wear armor before it can be given a weapon, and players hand weapons over by interacting while holding one.

  4. Throwing sticks and bones

Thrown sticks or bones draw nearby dogs to chase, which distracts them from the player.

  5. Three aggression levels

Holding a stick on a tamed dog cycles it through passive, neutral and hostile behavior.

What the author says

Adds multiple new blocks and changes to enchance vanilla wolfs. No longer is the fear of your dog dying, with dog beds. Simply sit your dog on a dog bed, and they'll respawn at that bed. Dog beds can be crafted with all 16 carpets allowing you to customize your dog a bit more.
