Abort
by Solvanan
Abort is a Fabric client mod that lets a player break out of a frozen Minecraft window by pressing Alt and Backspace.
What it does
When the game hangs on a GUI screen, a standard button or the Escape key may stop responding and leave the client soft-locked. Abort listens for Alt and Backspace at the hardware-input level, below the GUI input listeners, so the hotkey still works in that state and the player can recover without force-killing the Java process.
Abort is built to stay out of the way. It uses a mixin into the low-level GLFW render loop and polls hardware directly, so it adds no measurable overhead when nothing is frozen. Its three actions are Screen Reset, which clears active GUI layers, Safe Disconnect, which closes world handles stuck in a saving state, and Main Menu Exit, which forces a clean render of the title screen.
The mod is client-side only, so it works in singleplayer worlds and on multiplayer servers without any server-side installation. It is published for Fabric only, with Fabric Loader 0.15.0 as the minimum loader version, and the 1.0.0 build targets 1.21.11. The code is open source under the MIT License.
Key features
Emergency hotkey
Pressing Alt and Backspace triggers the recovery actions even while standard buttons and the Escape key are unresponsive.
Screen reset
Instantly clears every active GUI screen layer, returning the client to a usable state.
Safe disconnect
Closes world handles that are stuck inside a saving state, so the client can leave the world cleanly.
Main menu exit
Forces the game to render the main title screen again, giving a clean route back from a frozen session.
Compatibility
Latest build for each game version and loader.
Only full game releases are shown. This mod publishes no snapshot builds.
Use cases
Unresponsive GUI screens
If a container, menu or settings screen stops accepting clicks and Escape, the reset actions clear it and return to the title screen.
Who it’s for: Players on Fabric who run into frozen GUI screens during singleplayer or multiplayer sessions and want a recovery hotkey instead of closing the whole game process.

What the author says
A lightweight client-side Fabric mod designed to break you out of frozen, hung, or unresponsive GUI screens in Minecraft without having to force-kill the Java process or Alt-Tab. Minecraft occasionally hangs on main-thread file I/O operations. When this happens, standard GUI buttons and the regular ESC key stop…
