Tough Beginnings

by MC_jmods

Tough Beginnings makes the first hours of a survival world harder: wood, stone, tools and a workbench each take more steps to obtain.

What it does

Trees no longer give wood when punched. The player has to harvest gravel to get raw flint, and raw flint is of no use until it is sharpened by bashing a stone block, which gives a chance of flint. Failed attempts leave flint shards that combine into a new gravel block. Once flint is in hand, a flint knife can strip fiber from the foliage around the player, and fiber turns into fiber rope, which is needed for a flint axe. Logs are then obtained normally with the flint axe.

Plain wooden planks stop being a direct option for wooden tools. Planks and blocks are carved with a knife held in the main hand, and a fire is started by right clicking with a stick in the main hand, using friction. Fire toughens wood blocks, and tough wood is what the wooden tools are crafted from. Stone no longer drops itself when mined: it drops rocks that combine back into the original block, and the stone tool recipes take the player into the stone age. Every player and the server need a copy of the mod. It is published for Forge and NeoForge for 1.20.1 and 1.21.1, with 1.9.4 as the latest file for both loaders.

Key features

  1. Gravel gives raw flint

Flint is only obtained from gravel, and raw flint must be sharpened before it has any use.

  2. Flint knife and fiber

A flint knife gathers fiber from foliage, and fiber is pressed into rope for the flint axe.

  3. Carved planks

Planks and blocks are carved with a knife held in the main hand instead of being used directly.

  4. Friction fire and tough wood

Right clicking with a stick starts a fire, and fire toughens wood blocks so they can be used for wooden tools.

Use cases

Slower early game

Players who want the first stage of a survival world to last longer can use the mod to add extra steps before the first tools.

Stone age progression

Stone drops rocks and the stone tool recipes build a clear sequence from flint to stone tools.

Who it’s for: Survival players who want the opening of a world to be more grindy, and server owners who want the same early progression for everyone on the server.

Questions

Does Tough Beginnings need to be installed on the server?

Yes. Every player and the server need a copy of the mod.

Which loaders does Tough Beginnings support?

Forge and NeoForge. Files exist for 1.20.1 and 1.21.1, and the latest file for both loaders is 1.9.4.

What the author says

Tough Beginnings is a mod that make the early game process of obtaining wood/stone/tools/workbench a little more difficult. Instead of being able to punch trees to obtain wood you must harvest gravel to obtain Raw Flint, this flint is useless in its raw form. In order to sharpen the flint you must bash it on a stone…
