PingOverlay
by SuperrSohrab
With PingOverlay installed, each player's latency in milliseconds appears beside their nametag, color-coded by connection quality.
What it does
The client-side Fabric mod appends the ping, shown as Xms, to the nametag of every other player in view, so the connection quality of a player can be read at a glance. Each player's latency is stored for three seconds before the mod looks it up again, so repeated lookups are kept to a minimum and the displayed numbers still stay up to date. Installation is on the client only, and the mod has no server component to set up.
Color coding separates low, medium and high ping, and the thresholds can be changed without editing source code. The settings are available in a screen in the pause menu, and a user-editable config file is supported for players who prefer to edit values by hand. The mod is built for Minecraft 1.21.11 and later and is published for 1.21.11, 26.1, 26.1.1 and 26.1.2, with 1.0.1 for 26.1.2 as the latest file. Its license is the MIT License, but the project is not open source.
Key features
Latency on nametags
The ping in milliseconds is drawn next to each player's nametag, so latency is visible without opening the tab list.
Color-coded quality
Low, medium and high ping each get a distinct color, with red starting at 120 ms by default.
Pause menu settings
A settings screen in the pause menu adjusts the ping thresholds and display options.
Editable config file
A user-editable config file holds the thresholds, so values such as yellowMaxMs can be set by hand.
Compatibility
Latest build for each game version and loader.
Only full game releases are shown. This mod publishes no snapshot builds.
Use cases
Reading connection quality
Players in a group can check whether a teammate with lag is the cause of stuttering before blaming the server.
Who it’s for: Players who play on multiplayer servers and want to see each other's latency during a session. The mod needs only the client, so it can be added to a server's players without server changes.
How it compares
Nametag Ping is also client-side only and open source under the MIT License, with builds for 1.21.11 – 26.2. Ping Viewer is server-side only and not open source, released under All rights reserved for 1.21.4 – 26.2, so it places the display on the server instead of each player's client. Tab Ping is client-side only under the MIT License for 1.20.4 – 26.1 and shows latency in the tab list rather than on nametags.
