MCXR Play

by Sorenon

MCXR Play lets players of Minecraft Java Edition on Fabric and Quilt play the game in virtual reality through OpenXR headsets.

What it does

The mod turns Minecraft into a VR experience on Fabric and Quilt, with roomscale movement, a crosshair that follows the head, and controls rebound to VR hardware. Only the client needs it, so players join servers without installing anything extra. Pause and time behavior can be switched between VR and a flat screen, and a pancake mode displays the game without headset tracking. The mod is published for 1.18.2 – 1.19.1 and depends on MCXR Core.

Several optional parts extend the mod. Pehkui compatibility lets a player scale their size in the world. Standalone Quest support is provided through QuestCraft, and the OpenXR layer covers the control rebinding. Basic roomscale features work on a server that runs MCXR Core, while the Canvas renderer is incompatible. Because of issues with LWJGL's default memory allocator, the author recommends installing Sodium alongside MCXR Play, and Iris and Sodium are described as the most performant options for most systems. The author says the mod is kept minimal so it stays compatible with other Fabric mods.

Key features

  1. Roomscale movement

Players walk through the world in tracked physical space, and the crosshair follows where the head points.

  2. Pancake mode

A flat-screen display option lets the game run without headset tracking, with time behavior adjustable for pause.

  3. Player scaling

With Pehkui installed, a player can change their scale in the world, which the author supports through compatibility code.

  4. Control rebinding

Controls can be rebound for VR input, with the OpenXR layer handling the mapping between devices and the game.

Use cases

Standalone headset play

Players on a standalone Quest headset can use QuestCraft alongside MCXR Play to run the game without a PC.

Servers with roomscale

On a server that runs MCXR Core, players can use basic roomscale features while the server needs no client mod.

Who it’s for: The mod suits players who own an OpenXR headset and use Fabric or Quilt, including those who want to play Minecraft in VR on a single-player world or a server.

Questions

Which loaders does MCXR Play support?

The mod is published for Fabric and Quilt only. Files exist for 1.18.2, 1.19 and 1.19.1.

Does MCXR Play need to be installed on a server?

No. It is installed on the player's side alone, so servers need nothing.

Why does the author recommend Sodium with MCXR Play?

Because of issues with LWJGL's default allocator, the author recommends always installing Sodium alongside MCXR Play.

What the author says

MCXR Play is currently the only way to play Minecraft in VR on Fabric. Thanks to Sodium and Iris it is also the most performant Minecraft VR mod (on the majority of systems) and it is designed to be as minimally invasive as possible to maintain compatibility with other Fabric mods.
