LegacyAuth
by Moyettes
LegacyAuth restores player authentication on Minecraft Beta servers that still run in online mode, so names are verified and spoofing is blocked.
What it does
Beta servers that once checked accounts against the online service stopped working as expected for later builds, and LegacyAuth brings that verification back for the older releases. A legacy server such as b1.2_02 can once again confirm that the joining player owns the name they use, which closes the gap that allowed name spoofing.
The mod also brings back player skins for the Beta versions, so players see their proper skins in-game as they did originally. Restoring skins takes only a client install, and servers can join without any change to their file list. Because the mod is a lightweight addition, it adds little overhead to a world or a server.
Files are published for Ornithe only, across 11 release versions b1.0 – b1.7.3, and the mod is licensed under the MIT License. It is not open source. Snapshot builds are published as well, and the issue tracker is public for bug reports.
Key features
Account verification on legacy servers
Verifies joining players against their online accounts on Beta servers that run in online mode, blocking name spoofing.
Beta skin restoration
Brings back proper player skins in the Beta versions, so each player appears with their own skin again.
Normal server joins
Players join supported servers as usual, with no extra steps and no changes to the server's mods folder.
Lightweight design
The mod is small and does not change world generation or gameplay systems beyond authentication and skins.
Use cases
Running a Beta server in online mode
Server owners who want verified accounts on a legacy build can keep online-mode checks working for their players.
Playing with correct skins
Players who want to see their own skins on Beta versions can add the client mod to restore them.
Who it’s for: The mod suits players of the Beta releases and the owners of legacy servers who want accounts verified. Players who only join a server and do not run one need the client side for skins alone.
