HowManyItems

by spacecraft

HowManyItems is an inventory editor and recipe viewer for Minecraft Beta versions, used to look up how items are made and to edit the inventory.

ModLoaderClient-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen sourceb1.5_01 – b1.8.1

What it does

HowManyItems gives Minecraft b1.5_01 through b1.8.1 a recipe viewer modeled on the inventory tools later Minecraft releases became known for. Players browse the recipes and items available, and pressing BACKSPACE returns to the previous recipe searched.

The mod is installed by adding it to a ModLoader setup, and the zip is placed in the .minecraft/mods folder. Modmakers can add their own tabs through the addModTab method, so other mods can show extra screens inside it. The code is licensed under the MIT License and is open source.

The mod is client-side only, so only the player's client needs it and a server runs without it. Builds are published for b1.5_01, b1.7.3 and b1.8.1, and snapshot builds are published as well. The source code and issue tracker are public.

Key features

  1. Recipe viewer

Lists recipes for items in Beta-era Minecraft so players can check how a crafted item is made.

  2. Inventory editor

Lets players edit their inventory from within the game, for building and testing purposes.

  3. Backspace navigation

Pressing BACKSPACE returns to the previously searched recipe, making it quick to move between lookups.

  4. Tabs for modmakers

Other mod authors can add their own tabs with addModTab, so their content appears inside HowManyItems.

No per-version build data
Modrinth lists game versions for this project (b1.5_01 – b1.8.1), but the source data has no build per game version and loader, so the compatibility grid is not shown.

Use cases

Checking crafting recipes

Players looking up how an item is made in an old Beta world can use the recipe viewer without leaving the game.

Testing inventories

Builders and testers can change their inventory contents directly through the editor.

Who it’s for: Players of Beta-era Minecraft who want recipe lookup and inventory editing, and modmakers who want to add their own tabs to the interface.
