Better Ladder Placement

by JyloDev

Better Ladder Placement lets a ladder be set on any open face, so a player no longer needs a supporting block behind it.

FabricClient-side onlyAll rights reserved1.21 – 1.21.11

What it does

Vanilla ladders can only be placed against a solid supporting block, and breaking that block removes the ladder. This Fabric mod changes that rule: a ladder can be placed on open air and stays where it is, with the same rotated look as a vanilla ladder set against a surface. The ladder faces the direction the player is standing, and no barrier blocks or scaffolding are needed to hold it up.

The mod has one purpose, and it works only on the client. Because it touches only how ladders are placed, it does not change the world data a server stores. Destroying a block that used to support a ladder no longer takes the ladder with it. Removing the mod leaves any floating ladders in the world as plain ladder blocks.

Ladders placed by this mod may look different from a 3D ladder model used by some resource packs, since the model follows the vanilla ladder. Players who want a different look can keep a resource pack that replaces the model. The mod is published for Fabric only, across 12 release versions, 1.21 – 1.21.11, under All rights reserved.

Key features

  1. Free-standing ladders

A ladder can be placed on air, without a supporting block behind it, from any direction the player faces.

  2. Vanilla-style rotation

A ladder placed against a surface keeps the rotated placement that vanilla ladders use.

  3. Supports no longer required

Breaking the block that once held a ladder leaves the ladder in place instead of removing it.

  4. Single-purpose change

The mod alters only ladder placement and the ladder model, and adds no other blocks, items or screens.

Questions

Does Better Ladder Placement need a server install?

No. Servers do not need it; each player installs it for their own game.

Which loader does Better Ladder Placement use?

The mod is published for Fabric only. Its latest file is 0.0.3.1.21 for 1.21.11, released on 2025-12-17.

Do ladders placed by the mod still break when their support is removed?

No. Destroying a supporting block does not destroy the attached ladder, so ladders placed in open air stay put.

What the author says

Better Ladders This mod has one single purpose: It changes the vanilla ladder model to be placeable anywhere without any supporting blocks. No need to mess around with barrier blocks anymore. If the ladder is placed against a supporting block, the ladder is placed rotated against its surface like in vanilla. If there…
