Better Entity Culling (BEC)

by ZToast

Better Entity Culling, or BEC, is a client-side Fabric mod that skips rendering entities the player cannot see, for 1.21.1.

FabricClient-side onlyAll rights reserved1.21.1

What it does

Each frame, the client checks which entities fall inside the current in-game field of view and skips drawing the rest. Mobs, dropped items, projectiles, boats, minecarts, armor stands and falling blocks such as sand and anvils are all covered. Entities hidden behind terrain walls or outside the view frustum are culled as well, so the game spends less time drawing objects that never reach the screen.

The check follows the field of view as it changes, so zooming, drawing a bow or drinking potions is taken into account. A config option limits rendering to entities in front of the player, which removes visual clutter as well as cost. The mod needs Fabric API, the mod's only required dependency, and it is published only for Fabric on 1.21.1.

Servers do not need it; each player installs it for their own game. The code is all rights reserved and not open source, and the author labels the feature set as beta. The first file, 0.1.0, was published on 2025-11-30 and the latest file followed on 2025-12-01.

Key features

  1. Culling outside the view cone

Entities outside the actual view cone are skipped, using a smooth adaptive 3D angle check.

  2. Hidden entities skipped

Entities behind walls or terrain are not drawn, even when they sit inside the field of view.

  3. Front-only rendering option

A config setting renders only the entities in front of the player, reducing visual clutter.

  4. Automatic, no setup

The mod works without files or commands, and its culling runs on its own during play.

Questions

Does Better Entity Culling need Fabric API?

Yes. Fabric API is its only required dependency, and the mod is published only for Fabric on 1.21.1.

Does the server need Better Entity Culling?

No. Players add it to their own game, and a server needs no copy.

Does the field of view check work while zooming?

Yes. The check uses the in-game field of view, so zoom, bow draws and potion effects are included.
