Afterlight

by AttackStudioYT

Afterlight changes what happens when a player dies in Minecraft Java Edition: the player becomes a ghost instead of seeing the respawn screen.

FabricClient and serverAll rights reserved1.21.11 – 26.1.2

What it does

On death, the player does not return through the usual respawn screen. The character turns into a ghost that stays in place at the death scene. A ghost is translucent to other players, or invisible to them, depending on the settings, and it can drift around the area while it stays intangible.

A ghost cannot interact with the world and takes no damage. Mobs ignore it, and melee attacks and projectiles pass straight through. Two ghost forms can be set in the configuration, and the server sets a default that each player may override. Players who want to end the state can use a Revival Beacon, a craftable item that another player brings to the scene to revive them.

The recipe appears in the recipe book once a Revival Beacon has been crafted. Server owners can use the afterlight subcommands, which are restricted to operators. Afterlight is client and server, so the server and every player need it. Files are published for Fabric for 1.21.11 and for 26.1, 26.1.1 and 26.1.2, and the latest file is 26.1-Beta-1 for 26.1.2, on the beta channel. It is licensed as All rights reserved, so it is not open source.

Use cases

Cooperative revival

Friends gather around a fallen player's ghost and use a Revival Beacon to bring them back, turning death into a shared task.

Who it’s for: Players who want death to carry a visible consequence without losing the world, and server owners who want to set the ghost rules for their players.

Questions

Does Afterlight have to be installed on both sides?

Yes. Servers that run it need every player to install it too.

How does a ghost get revived?

Another player crafts a Revival Beacon and uses it at the death scene. The recipe appears in the recipe book after the first beacon is crafted.

What the author says

When you die in Minecraft, instead of seeing the respawn screen, you become a ghost — translucent, intangible, and unable to interact with the world. You drift around the death scene as your friends scramble to revive you with a Revival Beacon. The recipe unlocks in your recipe book once you have a Beacon.
