Worn Tear

by MerrySnow

Worn Tear is a Forge server mod that ties tool efficiency, weapon damage and armor toughness to how much durability an item has left.

ForgeServer required, client optionalGNU General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.20.1 – 1.20.6

What it does

Durability drives the effect. As an item loses durability its efficiency for mining and its weapon damage change, following a curve that the server owner defines per item. A wooden axe can be set to keep a fixed 400% efficiency at any durability, while shears can be set to lose efficiency in a straight line as they wear, dropping to 0% when their durability reaches zero. Armor toughness can be linked to durability in the same way.

The mod is configured through a file rather than in-game. Each item's curve is set with coefficients, so a flat rule, a linear fall-off or a stepped change between durability thresholds can all be written down. For example, an iron shovel can hold a base efficiency of 30% until its durability falls below 40%, then keep 30% from there, while a range between 40% and 50% changes linearly. Enabling the tooltip coefficient display shows the resulting effect on each item, so the curve can be checked without testing it in play.

Worn Tear runs on the server and is published for Forge only, for 1.20.1 – 1.20.6. The server must run it, and players may add it to see tooltip values. The code is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, and the source code and issue tracker are public.

Key features

  1. Durability-based efficiency

Tool mining efficiency follows a curve tied to remaining durability, set separately for each item.

  2. Weapon damage curves

The same durability curves apply to block breaking speed and weapon damage, so the rules stay consistent.

  3. Armor toughness

Armor toughness can also change with durability, which makes worn armor weaker in a configurable way.

  4. Coefficient configuration

A configuration file sets how each item's performance changes as durability drops, using customizable curves.

  5. Tooltip coefficient display

An optional setting shows the coefficient values in item tooltips so the effect can be read in game.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Server owners who want to change how durability affects tools, weapons and armor, and modpack authors who need per-item control over that effect.

Questions

Does Worn Tear need to be installed on clients?

Only the server has to run it. Players can add it as well to see tooltip coefficient values, but the game works without it on their side.

Which loader does Worn Tear support?

Worn Tear is published for Forge only, with files for 1.20.1 – 1.20.6 and 1.0.0 for 1.20.6 as the latest file.

Can the durability effect be set for each item?

Yes. The configuration file sets the curve for each item, including flat, linear and threshold-based rules.

What the author says

Want durability to affect tool efficiency and weapon damage? This mod provides a convenient configuration file that allows you to easily set how an item's performance changes with durability loss based on customizable curves. You can enable tooltip coefficient displays in the configuration file to visualize these…
