Tactical Footsteps Lite

by hutieu719

Tactical Footsteps Lite is a Forge client-side mod that changes how player footsteps are heard, separating them by relation to the listener.

ForgeClient-side onlyAll rights reserved1.20.1

What it does

Footstep sounds from the player, from allies and from enemies are split into separate groups, each with its own volume and range settings. Players who want to track nearby movement in multiplayer can tune how loud each group is and how far it carries. Sounds from allies and enemies fade smoothly as distance grows.

The mod sits entirely on the client, so only players need to install it and a server can run without it. It is published for Forge and for 1.20.1 only, in version 0.2.0. It works with the built-in vanilla player footsteps and with Presence Footsteps sound IDs, and the optional Presence Footsteps dependency is recommended for matching sounds. The code is closed and covered by All rights reserved.

Key features

  1. Separate relation volumes

Self, ally and enemy footsteps each get their own volume slider, so one group can be quieter or louder than the others.

  2. Range sliders with fading

Ally and enemy ranges are set separately, and their sounds fade smoothly with distance instead of cutting off.

  3. Centered self footsteps

Footsteps from the player are heard as centered, non-positional 2D audio, with an optional toggle to turn that off.

  4. Optional ally low-pass filter

An OpenAL low-pass filter can muffle ally footsteps, and it is off unless enabled.

  5. Organized settings screen

Options are grouped into Volume, Range, Self and Filters tabs for quicker adjustment.

Questions

Does Tactical Footsteps Lite need to be installed on the server?

No. It is installed on the player's side alone, so servers need nothing.

Which game versions does Tactical Footsteps Lite support?

Version 0.2.0 targets 1.20.1 for Forge only, with no other game versions listed.

Does the mod conflict with Minecraft's directional audio setting?

The author notes say Minecraft Directional Audio is forced and locked while the mod is installed, so that option cannot be changed.
