ForceGL20
by kabanfriends
ForceGL20 changes the OpenGL version the game requests at launch, so Minecraft 1.17 and later can start on older graphics cards that lack OpenGL 3.2.
What it does
Since Minecraft 1.17 the game has required OpenGL 3.2, and some older graphics cards cannot provide it, which stops the game from launching. ForceGL20 lowers the required version to OpenGL 2.0, the level earlier releases used, so those machines can start newer builds. Its only purpose is changing the OpenGL version, and it applies no other fixes to the game code.
The mod is client-side only, so servers and other players need nothing. Its files target 1.17 – 1.20.4 on Fabric and Forge, with v1.1.0 as the latest build for 1.20.4 published on 2023-05-23. The code is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and the source repository is public.
The author no longer develops the mod and says support is not provided, because running the game on an unsupported OpenGL level can cause other problems. Pull requests are still accepted, and a fork named Coredex is maintained separately. Adding OpenGL 2.0 support does not add features for players who already run modern hardware.
Key features
OpenGL 2.0 override
Forces the game to request OpenGL 2.0 at launch, in place of the OpenGL 3.2 that Minecraft 1.17 and later require.
Older hardware launch
Lets some older graphics cards start Minecraft versions that otherwise refuse to open on them.
Targeted change only
Changes the requested OpenGL version and nothing else in the game code, so other behavior stays as the game ships it.
GLFW error 65543 fix
Resolves the GLFW error 65543 message shown at launch; other GLFW error codes are outside the mod's scope.
Compatibility
Latest build for each game version and loader.
1.20.x5 of 5 versions with builds
1.19.x5 of 5 versions with builds
1.18.x3 of 3 versions with builds
1.17.x2 of 2 versions with builds
Only full game releases are shown. This mod publishes no snapshot builds.
Use cases
Launching on an old computer
A player with a machine that lacks OpenGL 3.2 installs the mod to start a 1.17 or later build that would otherwise fail at launch.
Who it’s for: Players whose graphics cards support OpenGL 2.0 but not OpenGL 3.2, and who can accept an unsupported setting for the game. Players with newer hardware do not need it.
